Support legislation that proclaims that someone’s property is no longer a valid indicator of a family’s wealth and that Property Tax is no longer a viable method of funding the state’s education system. Proclaim that Property Tax is insidious and is the number one enemy of community stability and open space preservation.
End the Nightmare and eliminate property tax as a way of funding school systems.
We agree with Assemblyman Joel Miller of the 102nd Assembly District. “Real property tax on residential properties is often an archaic and inequitable form of taxation which requires lower income taxpayers to pay a higher percentage of their income on property taxes. The current property tax system often creates a disincentive for local residents to become home owners and hinders the ability to sell or transfer property.
“The current system of the residential school property tax is problematic on many levels. It does not assign the taxing levy on an individual's ability to pay, but arbitrarily on the value of their property. Wealthier people living in inexpensive homes and poorer people in costly homes are perfect examples of this inequity. A shift away from residential property assessment to a tax based on income is a much fairer way to tax, and would still allow for total local control of schools.”
But how will we replace what’s eliminated if we prevail? That’s not our job! That’s not this committee’s mission. That’s the job of legislators and school boards who have been enjoying an easy ride with our money.
Don’t be fooled by fear tactics. Let legislators and school boards know that they have a lot of work ahead of them and they need to start cranking.
Vote to end the nightmare!
Right now!!
